Blue Christmas is a tradition in Western Christianity that occurs around the time of the Winter Solstice, usually on December 21st. It focuses on comforting fellow Christians who are grieving and struggling to find happiness and optimism during the festive period and to help those feeling lonely because of the absence of loved ones.

This month will be four (4) years that our beloved Dad passed and we miss him so much! This year for me, it hurt more. I was pondering and wonder why this year feels so much different than the past three years - because I miss him and Christmas was his all-time favorite time of the year. I'm thankful and grateful that I have wonderful memories of my Dad and I draw on those times. It's important to allow yourself to grieve, but don't stay there. I like to turn to the book of Psalms and read a few scriptures to uplift me.

Some churches have worship services for Christians to have the opportunity to express their grief, pain and heartache. Blue lights are used and Candles for this event. This is also an opportunity to share the Love of Jesus Christ and to help people focus on His promises and to give them hope.

You can share words of encouragement and uplifting scriptures to those who may be feeling lonely, sad or have lost a loved one. Here are a few thoughts to get you started.

Deuteronomy 31:8 - "The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Psalm 28:7 - "The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him."

I encourage you to reach out to someone who has lost a loved one or someone you haven't spoken to in a while. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to give you a word of encouragement and please don't leave out an encouraging and uplifting scripture to end your conversation. You both will be blessed!
