Praying together in marriage strengthens the spiritual bond between husband and wife and invites peace, wisdom and unity into the relationship.

When couples take time to pray together, they grow closer not only to each other but also in their faith and purpose.

Praying together opens both your hearts for forgiveness, guidance and comfort during both joyful and difficult times.

A marriage grounded in prayer can develop deeper trust, stronger communication, and a lasting foundation built on love and faith.

Over the years, we have tried different seasons of praying together (holding hands, kneeling, standing, and sitting). It doesn't matter which posture you decide on, the important fact is to learn how to "pray together." It becomes very personal and you may feel vulnerable at first because you are coming before the LORD and speaking to Him about your spouse (in front of your spouse). The more you engage in praying together, the easier it becomes. Maybe you are not a "prayer" but trust me, sometimes that would be the one that prays the longest (smile).

Praying together is an important part of a strong marriage. It builds strength and courage, and if you have children, it also gives them the example of seeing their parents pray together as a family. If this has not yet been part of your marriage, it is never too late to begin.

You can "pray the scriptures" over your marriage and invite God into your space for guidance, protection and blessings in your relationship.

This is very important to us, so we are sharing examples along with key scriptures to get you started. All scriptures are taken from the New International Version (NIV) and the New King James Version (NKJV).

  • Genesis 2:24"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh."
    • PRAYER (Dear Father, please help us to honor the sacred bond of our marriage as we grow together as one. In Jesus' Name, Amen).
  • Mark 10:9"Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."
    • PRAYER (Dear Father, please protect our marriage from any division that may try to infiltrate this union and strengthen us daily in Your love. In Jesus' Name, Amen).
  • James 1:5 - "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you."
    • PRAYER (Dear Father, please give us the wisdom we need in making decisions for our marriage and our family. Help us to communicate effectively and to resolve any conflicts that may arise. Guide us as we follow You. In Jesus' Name, Amen).
  • 2 Peter 3:18"But grow in the grace and knowledge of our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever! Amen."
    • PRAYER (Dear Father, please draw us closer to You individually and as a couple, deepening our faith as we rely on Your Word. In Jesus' Name, Amen).
  • Colossians 3:13"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the LORD forgave you."
    • PRAYER (Dear Father, please help us to forgive each other freely, letting go of any past hurts and heal our hearts as we walk in Your Grace. In Jesus' Name, Amen).
  • Isaiah 54:17a"No weapon formed against you shall prosper."
    • PRAYER (Dear Father, please protect our marriage from any spiritual attacks, conflicts, and harm. Please surround us with Your peace and give us favor as a married couple and as a family. In Jesus' Name, Amen).

You can pray as the Holy Spirit lead and guide you. As we stated before, the most important part for both of you is to just "start."
